Mastery  - Mastering the Four Basics of Small Business Ownership

There are many steps you must take to have your business become truly successful.  The first step is that of mastery.  Simply stated, business mastery is the ability to deliver profitably, productively and with enough information to make great decisions.

Most small business owners are good at what they do, which is why they open a new business in the first place. But there is a big difference between being good at what you do and being good a running a business. There are questions of time, money, and commitment.

As a business owner you need to know historical numbers and ones that will create your future as well. The first thing you will need to know is what it takes to break even. This can be determined by how many sales, customers or dollars you need to make daily. Once this has been established daily, weekly or monthly budget objectives can be set followed by the strategies needed to obtain those budgets.

Your productivity and the productivity of your staff will determine the success and profitability of your business. Stated another way, how do you use your time? Are you doing things that can be done by someone else on your staff? Are you using your time to set strategy or, are you simply doing busy work? To determine the answer to these questions perform an analysis of your work schedule. For a complete week write down what you do, when you do it and how many hours it takes to complete these tasks. Next, write a list of tasks that you do on a regular basis. Finally, select two or three of these tasks and assign them to someone else on your staff. This will free your time to be more focused and productive.

Success is determined by what you want and where you are going. To start, write down your vision. This is the overall “goal” you want to achieve in business – your overall purpose. It should be truly inspiring and engaging for yourself, your team and your customers. Next, write down your mission statement showing how you and your team will reach your vision. Finally, develop a cultural statement. Is the atmosphere going to be formal and professional or casual and laid back? This let’s those joining your team understand what is acceptable –and what isn’t.

Do you have the internal discipline to keep focused and achieving? Every business owner must ask this of themselves. Do you have the ability to change what is necessary to change, to stay the course when the situation dictates, to look beyond one bad day or one bad month and keep focused on the goals you set for yourself and your business?

Overview: Running a business is like getting thrown into the deep end of a pool as most business owners start their business with no formal training. There are major differences between you running a business and it running you. This is what business mastery is all about and why today many business owners are turning to a business coach who can help refocus your time, money and energy into the most productive areas that are good for you, your business and your family.
